Description


Aquatic fern-allies. Rhizome horizontal, roots absent. Lamina two types floating and submerged. The floating lamina, green in colour arranged in pairs, with a stalk, midrib distinct, and lamina folded along the midrib, the upper surface covered with papillae or not, the lower surface covered with straight, multi-cellular hairs. The other submerged lamina are finely dissected, root-like, short stalked, usually ovate or cordate in shape. Sporocarp borne in a cluster with multi-cellular hairs, external appearance more or less alike. A sporocarp contains two types of sporangium macrosporangium or microsporangia, which contains either a single macrosporangium or numerous microsporangia, never both kinds of sporangia together.
