Description


Annual or perennial herbs, stem brittle. Leaves alternate or subopposite, exstipulate, much divided into narrow segmemts. Flowers small, borne in terminal or leaf-opposed racemes, hermaphrodite. Sepals 2, scale-like, caducous. Petals 4 in 2 whorls, outer 2 larger with one or both gibbous or spurred, more or less completely enclosing the rest of flower, 2 inner smaller, erect, always similar, coherent tip. Stamens 6, diadelphous, opposite to outer petals, central anthers of each bundle 2-celled, remaining anthers 1-celled. Carpels 2, ovary superior, 1-locular with 2 to many ovules, stigmas bifid, stigmatic surfaces 2, 4 or 8. Fruits indehiscent, 1-seeded nut or a transversely septate capsule, dehiscing by valves. Seeds small.
