Description


Annual or perennial, erect or diffuse, slender herbs. Stem dichotomously branched, glabrous or pubescent. Leaves simple, opposite to subopposite or alternate or radical and rosulate, oblong to ovate or lanceolate to linear-lanceolate or ovate-subspathulate, entire or faintly dentate. Inflorescence terminal cymes which end in pseudo-racemes or in stalked umbels or few-flowered clusters or fascicles. Flowers bisexual, rarely unisexual, actinomorphic, regular, hypogynous, white or pink to purple. Tepals 4-5, usually free. Stamens 3-10, arranged in several rings. Carpels 2-5, free or connate, ovary superior, syncarpous, styles 3-5, linear, minute. Fruit nut or capsule. Seeds reniform, several in each cell.
