Description


Herbs, rarely undershrubs. Leaves opposite, less commonly alternate or whorled, simple, entire, stipules present or absent. Flowers in dichasial cymes or panicles, sometimes solitary, regular, bisexual or unisexual. Sepals 4-5, free or united. Petals 4-5, free or absent. Stamens 5-10, rarely fewer, inserted with petals and connate to them, anthers 2-celled. Disk small or annular or segmented. Ovary superior, unilocular or imperfectly 3-5 locular, ovules 1 to many on basal or free-central placenta, styles 2-5, free or connate. Fruit capsule, dehiscing by as many or twice the number of valves or apical teeth as styles, rarely a berry or achene. Seeds few to many, globose, pyriform or reniform, smooth or ornamented on testa.
