Sepals 5, rarely 4-7, free or connate, imbricate, often unequal, persistent. Petals 5, rarely 4-9, free or often slightly connate below, imbricate. Stamens many, free or shortly connate at base. Ovary superior, sessile, usually 3-5 or rarely 1-10 loculed, ovules 2 to many in each locule, rarely solitary, styles 2-5, free or partly united, stigmas usually small, capitate or entire. Fruit a capsule or berry. Seeds small, few or many.
