Description


Evergreen trees or shrubs. Leaves spiral or in pseudo-whorls, simple or pinnatisect, often dimorphous, entire, dentate or spiny. Inflorescence axillary, ramiflorous or cauliflorous or terminal spikes, or racemes or umbels. Bracts usually small, caducous, sometimes large, accrescent or woody, bracteoles 2. Flowers bisexual, rarely unisexual and dioecious, actinomorphic or zygomorphic, choripetalous. Perianth segments valvate, broadened at the apex. Torus flat or oblique. Stamens 4, epipetalous, anthers erect, 2-celled, connective prolonged. Disk annular or horseshoe-shaped, 4 hypogynous glands alternating with the stamens. Ovary superior, 1-celled, sessile or stipitate, styles terminal, stigmas small. Fruit dehiscent, coriaceous or woody follicle or a dry fruit or indehiscent nut or drupe.
