Description


Shrubs or trees, rarely scandent, evergreen or deciduous. Leaves simple, usually alternate, entire or serrate; stipules persistent or caducous or absent. Flowers in axillary cymes, racemes or pseudo-umbels, unisexual or bisexual, regular, white. Sepals united at base, caducous or persistent, absent in female flowers. Petals connate in male flowers, free in female flowers. Stamens adnate to base of the tube, rarely free, anthers dorsifixed. Carpels 4-many, ovary superior, 2-many celled with 1-2 ovules in each cell, pendulous, style very short or absent, stigma usually lobed, capitate or discoid. Fruits 1-seeded drupe.
