Description


Trees or shrubs, rarely herbs. Leaves simple, opposite or alternate, exstipulate, entire or toothed. Inflorescence cymose, panicles or heads, involucral bracts herbaceous. Flowers unisexual or bisexual, actinomorphic, regular. Sepals 4 or 5, united, adnate to ovary, valvate. Petals 4 or 5, free, alternate with sepals, valvate or imbricate. Stamens 4 or 5, inserted around disk, anthers tetrasporangiate and dithecal, longitudinal slits. Ovary 1-4 locular, inferior, syncarpous, ovule solitary in each locule, style terminal, stigma capitate or 2-4 fid. Fruit a berry or drupe, 2-seeded, free or syncarp. Seeds small, elongated.
