Description


Annual or perennial herbs or shrubs. Leaves simple, alternate. Inflorescence usually racemose. Flowers hermaphrodite, usually zygomorphic, bracteolate. Sepals 5, free, imbricate or open. Petals 5, free, hypogynous, usually zygomorphic. Stamens 5, alternate with petals, hypogynous, free or connate, often forming a cylinder round the ovary, anthers introrse, connective usually with membranous prolongation. Ovary superior, 1-celled, with one to numerous anatropous ovules on 3-parietal placeantas, styles simple, stigmas capitate, truncate or cupular, entire or lobed. Fruit a 3-valved loculicidal capsule. Seeds small, albumen fleshy.
