Description


Undershrubs, shrubs or small trees. Leaves small, often scale-like, usually sessile, generally fleshy and with punctate salt secreting glands. Inflorescence racemes, panicles or spikes. Flowers small, actinomorphic, bisexual or rarely unisexual,hypogynous. Sepals 4-5 (-6), free or connate imbricate, persistent. Petals 4-5 (-6), free, imbricate, persistent. Stamens 4-10 or numerous, inserted on or below disk, free or basally connate, united up to middle or above, or in 5 bundles. Pistil 1, ovary (2-) 3-4 (-5)-carpelled, unilocular or imperfectly septate, styles (2-) 3-4 (-5), free, or rarely basally connate or absent, stigmas capitate. Fruit a capsule, 3-5 angled and valved. Seeds numerous, erect with a coma at distal end.
