Description


Trees or shrubs, with milky latex. Leaves simple, alternate, petiolate, lamina entire and coriaceous. Flowers solitary or axillary cymose clusters. Calyx usually of 4-6 (-12) in 2-whorls, persistent. Petals as many as or twice as many as the sepals. Stamens epipetalous, as many as the petals and opposite to them, arranged in 1-3 whorls, usually only the inner whorl fertile, often fertile stamens alternate with the staminodes, anthers oblong-lanceolate. Carpels 2-14, united, with 1-14 loculed superior ovary, ovule 1 to more in each locule, style 1, stigmas minute. Fruit a berry. Seeds 1 or few, ellipsoidal.
