Description


Herbs, tuberous or rhizomatous rootstock, rarely shrubby; stem succulent, swollen at nodes, upright or procumbent. Leaves alternate or opposite, simple, crenate, dentate or serrate, petiolate or sessile, exstipulate. Flowers bisexual, zygomorphic, solitary or binate or fascicled in racemes or umbels, hypogynous bracts entire or toothed. Sepals 3 or 5, free, lateral small, lower one larger, spurred. Petals 3-5, coloured or white, standard resupinate, free, flat or cucullate, wings, entire or 2 to 3-lobed. Stamens 5, anthers 2-locular. Ovary 5-locular, axile, ovules 5-many, style 1, stigmas 1-5. Capsules or berries, 5-valved, loculicidal, fleshy, explosive, dehiscent.
