Description


Perennials or annuals with rootstocks or creeping rhizomes. Leaves simple, alternate, linear to orbicular or trifoliolate with sheathing petioles. Flowers solitary or in racemes, branched cymes or in dense heads or clusters, unisexual or bisexual, hypogynous, regular. Sepals 5 or 4, connate at the base, persistent. Petals 5 or 4, yellow, white or pink. Stamens 5 or 4, connate to the base of the corolla tube, alternate with the corolla lobes. Carpels 2, syncarpous, ovary superior. Fruit a capsule, dehiscent or indehiscent.
