Terrestrial or epilithic, ocasionally epiphytic ferns. Rhizome creeping covered with deciduous hairs. Fronds generally large, simple pinnate or variously compound.Stipe continuous with the rhizome.Lamina  much divided ultimately more or less unequal at the base. Texture herbaceous, thin firm, never fleshy or leathery.Veins  free. Sorus terminal on the vein, and protected by a pouch-shaped indusium attached below and sides of the receptacle, enclosed in a cup or near the margin and more or less by a small reflexed lobe of the margin. Sporangia with an annulas, multicellular paraphyses often occur in between the sporangia. Spores monolete or trilete variously sculptured.
