Evergreen trees or shrubs. Leaves simple, alternate, entire or lobed with large stipules enfolding the terminal bud, deciduous. Flowers large, solitary, terminal, bisexual, hypogynous. Tepals 6-18, free, often more or less similar and all petaloid, less often clearly differentiated into sepals and petals. Stamens numerous, usually free, spirally arranged, originating in centripetal sequence, more or less ribbon-shaped. Carpels numerous, usually free, ovules most commonly 2, sometimes several, bitegmic. Fruits variously follicular or indehiscent berry or sarmaroid. Seeds usually large with abundant oily endosperm.
