Description


Herbs or undershrubs with a short, often stoloniferous rootstock. Leaves narrow basal, erect, flat, entire, sessile,  fleshy or cartilaginous, sheaths equitant, short. Inflorescence of simple or branched racemes, on stout scapes, erect. Flowers fascicled in the axils of scarious bracts, pedicels articulate. Perianth gamophyllous, segments 6, connate in a slender, usually long tube. Stamens 6, inserted on the top of perianth tube, filaments filiform. Carpels 3, connate in a 3-celled ovary, ovary superior, ovules solitary, erect in each cell. Fruit a berry, 1-3 seeded, membranous, indehiscent.
