Freshwater herbs, stems usually cormlike. Leaves all basal, crowded,  submerged leaves shortly petiolate, floating leaves long petiolate, 3-11 veined. Flowers unisexual or bisexual within tubular spathe, spathe peduncled, ribbed or winged, with1-many flowers, apex bifid or trifid. Male flowers : pedicels longer. Female flowers : pedicels shorter or without pedicel, sepals 3,  petals 3, much longer and wider than sepals. Stamens 3-15, filaments linear, flattened, anthers laterally dehiscent, ovary oblong, ovules numerous, stigmas 2 per style. Fruit cylindric, fusiform or conic. Seeds small, numerous.
