Description


Prostrate, scabrid annual herbs. Leaves alternate, small, crisped. Inflorescence axillary, often in upper unilateral racemes or in spikes with leafy bracts. Flowers white or yellow, sessile or nearly so. Calyx 4-5 partite, segments lanceolate or linear. Corolla connate at base to form a short tube, 4-5 lobed, imbricate in bud, lobes spreading. Stamens 4-5, inserted on corolla-tube, filaments short, anthers ovate. Ovary ovoid, 2-celled, ovules 2 in each cell or solitary while imperfectly 4-celled, style terminal, 2-fid, stigma capitate. Fruits mostly 1-seeded pyrenes or drupe, fleshy or dry. Seeds with thin testa.
