Prostrate, scabrid annual herbs. Leaves
alternate, small, crisped. Inflorescence axillary, often in upper unilateral
racemes or in spikes with leafy bracts. Flowers white or yellow, sessile or
nearly so. Calyx 4-5 partite, segments lanceolate or linear. Corolla connate at
base to form a short tube, 4-5 lobed, imbricate in bud, lobes spreading.
Stamens 4-5, inserted on corolla-tube, filaments short, anthers ovate. Ovary
ovoid, 2-celled, ovules 2 in each cell or solitary while imperfectly 4-celled,
style terminal, 2-fid, stigma capitate. Fruits mostly 1-seeded pyrenes or
drupe, fleshy or dry. Seeds with thin testa.
