Trees, shrubs or subscandent. Leaves simple, alternate or sub-opposite, petiolate, entire or crenate-serrate. Inflorescence terminal or axillary panicled to corymbose, few-flowered. Flowers bisexual but functionally more or less unisexual, frequently heterostylous. Calyx tubular or campanulate, 5-lobed, persistent. Corolla campanulate base, 4-5 lobed, often 3 to 8-lobed, irregular at margin, spreading or reflexed, imbricate or contorted in buds. Stamens 4-8, filaments adnate to corolla tube, anthers exserted or included. Ovary 4-celled, 1 erect ovule in each cell, style terminal, twice 2-partite, stigma linear or clavate. Fruits drupaceous, ovoid or ellipsoid, included partly by accrescent cupuliform calyx at base, viscid pulp, 1-4 seeded.
