Trees, shrubs or rhizomatous herbs, armed or unarmed, stem stout when erect. Leaves spirally arranged or alternate, pinnate or pinnately decompound, stipules generally developed. Inflorescence terminal, paniculate, compound-umbellate or corymbose. Flowers pentamerous to octamerous. Calyx 5-8 toothed or truncate. Petals free. Stamens 5-8. Ovary inferior, 5-8 celled, styles free or shortly connate at the base. Fruit drupaceous, fleshy, more or less globose, endocarp crustose or somewhat hardened. Seeds in pyrene with smooth endosperm.
