Description


 

Perennial, scapigerous herbs, with truncate bulbs and characteristic foetid, pungent odour when fresh. Leaves radical, usually fistular, flat or grooved, sheath enveloping  scape below. Inflorescence a terminal umbel, enclosed in a spathelike bract. Flowers bisexual,  occasionally  flowers replaced by bulbils, perianth segments free or united. Stamens 6, filaments usually connate, adnate to perianth segments. Carpels 3, united into a 3-loculed ovary, ovules 1-several  per locule,  style simple, stigma entire or 3-cleft. Fruit a capsule, loculicidal. Seeds black, rhomboidal or spheroidal.
