Description


Shrubs or undershrubs. Leaves simple, opposite or whorled, entire or lobed. Flowers sessile, in elongated, slender, dense spikes or in small heads, bracts often more or less 4-ranked. Calyx membranous, ovoid-campanulate, tube 2-ridged or winged, limb 2-4 lobed or 4-toothed. Corolla tube straight or curved, limb faintly 2-lipped, upper emarginated or slightly 2-lobed, lower 3-lobed. Stamens 4, included, anther cells parallel. Ovary 2-celled, with 1 ovule in each cell, stigmas oblique, subcapitate. Fruits dry, separating into 2-seeded pyrenes. Seeds exalbuminous.
