Description


Trees or shrubs. Stipules adnate or free to petioles. Flowers terminal, large and showy. Tepals 9-12, usually 3-5 merous, subequal or the outer ones small and sepaloid. Anthers dehiscing introsely or laterally, connective produced. Gynoecium sessile. Carpels numerous, free or united. Fruiting carpels few, crowded, dehiscing along dorsal or ventral suture, sometimes woody and circumscissile, the upper portion falling away singly or in masses, with seeds remaining attached to a silky cord.
