Description


Medium-sized to large trees, tip of branches typically with strongly flattened buds. Stipules flattened to strongly keeled. Inflorescence terminal and axillary, consisting of stalked, many-flowered flowering heads in groups of 2-5, or of solitary flowering heads. Flowers of a head united by their ovary, 4 or 5-merous. Calyx persistent. Corolla hypocrateriform to infundibular. Stamens inserted in upper part of tube, anthers partially exserted. Ovary 2-loculed, each locule with numerous ovules, placenta attached to upper third of septum, styles with spindle-shaped stigmas, exserted, ovary of adjoining flowers of a head fused with each other. Fruitlets of a head united into an indehiscent syncarp, fruitlets crowned by persistent calyx lobes. Seeds numerous, very small, not winged.
