Acaulescent herbs with crown of leaves. Plants arising from a short rhizome or erect caudex. Leaves in rosettes, up to 60 cm long, full of juice, more or less succulent, linear to lanceolate, margins spiny toohted or entire. Inflorescence paniculate to more often racemose, up to 60 cm long, stout. Flowers bisexual, up to 3.5 cm long, pedicellate. Perianth lobes 6, united into a cylindric or campanulate tube, up to 3 cm long. Stamens 6 with dorsifixed anthers. Ovary 3-celled, ovules many on axile placentation. Fruit a capsule, oblong, many-seeded.
