Description


Perennial or annual, erect to creeping herbs, fleshy-succulent, terrestrial. Leaves few, alternate, petiolate, exstipulate, blade puberulent, base oblique, cuneate to cordate. Inflorescences racemose, lax and later appearing scorpioid, pseudoterminal or axillary; bract 1, opposite each flower. Calyx 5-lobed, segments equal, tube campanulate or semitranslucent. Corolla white, blue to purple, tube cylindric, 1.5-4.0 mm diameter, 2-lipped, adaxial lip 2-lobed, abaxial lip 3-lobed, seldom undivided, apex rounded. Stamens 2 or 4, filament adnate to corolla tube near middle. Ovary ovoid, 1-loculed; stigma 1, undivided. Fruit a capsule, straight, globose or ovoid, dehiscing loculicidally to base, valves 2, straight, not twisted, enclosed with calyx remnant. Seeds minute, cuneate, unappendaged.
