Description


Erect or subscandent herbs or undershrubs. Leaves petiolate, simple, opposite, entire to crenulate. Flowers pedicellate, various coloured, in lax or dense, usually 1-sided spikes or racemes. Bracts small, lanceolate, bracteoles minute. Calyx lobes 5, equal, shortly connate, linear-lanceolate, pubescent. Corolla infundibuliform, lobes 5, orbicular, obtuse, patent. Stamens 4, didynamous, fertile, included, connate in pairs, anthers dithecous, unequal. Ovary oblong-cylindrical, pubescent, 4-ovulate, style broadly pubescent, stigma minutely 2-fid or capitate. Capsule 2-4 seeded, elliptic-oblong, flattened, pubescent, tapering into a solid, constricted basal beak. Seeds orbicular or angled, compressed.
