Description


Shrubs. Leaves entire. Flowers in dense terminal spikes. Bracts large, leafy, sometimes toothed, bracteoles small, narrow. Calyx 5-lobed, lobes linear, connate below. Corolla with long, narrow, slender tube, limb 2-lipped, upper lip narriw, entire or shortly 2-fid, lower lip 3-lobed with broad pendent lobes. Stamens 2, inserted near the throat, anthers 2-celled, linear, parallel, muticous. Ovary with 2 ovules in each cell, styles filiform, stigma shortly equally 2-fid. Capsules ovoid, much compressed with a solid basal stipe. Seeds 4 or more, often 2, large, compressed, orbicular, tuberculate and scabrous, the tubercles sometimes finely glandular-glochidiate.
