Description


Shrubs or small trees. Stipules distinctive for each species, sometimes splitting into 2 halves.  Inflorescence of terminal panicles, composed of small compact cymes, bracteoles small, lanceolate or oblong, often serrate, persistent. Flowers white, fragrant. Calyx small, glabrous or hirsute, tube ovate, urceolate or oblong, teeth (4-)5, erect, persistent. Corolla small, tubular, often widened upwards with (4-)5 spreading or reflexed lobes. Stamens inserted in the upper part of the corolla tube between the lobes, anthers oblong or elliptic, sessile and semi-included or on short filaments and shortly exserted between corolla lobes. Ovary 2-celled, ovules many, styles filiform, stigmas exserted, clavate. Fruits small capsules, crowned with persistent calyx teeth. Seeds numerous, small, angled.
