Description


Prostrate or decumbent, perennial herbs. Leaves in unequal pairs, very variable, entire or obscurely crenate. Flowers in dense terminal, 1-sided spikes. Bracts usually 3-flowered. Sepals 5, connate at the base, one larger and ovate, others smaller, linear. Corolla tube slender, lobes subequal, rounded. Stamens 4, didynamous, anther cells 2, minutely mucronate at the base. Ovary 2-celled with 2 ovules in each cell, style long, hairy, upper lobe of stigma small or rudimentary. Capsules clavate, compressed. Seeds 4, discoid, hygroscopically hairy.
