Description


Perennial herbs or subshrubs. Leaves elliptic, ovate-lanceolate or oblong-spathulate, entire. Flowers mostly large, violet-blue, purple, red or white, showy and chasmogamous or small and cleistogamous, solitary, axillary or in terminal or axillary cymes or panicles. Calyx deeply 5-partite, lobes linear or lanceolate. Corolla infundibuliform or salver-shaped, limb spreading, subequally 5-lobed. Stamens 4, didynamous, filaments inserted below the throat, basally united in pairs, anthers 2-celled, muticous. Ovary 2-celled, ovules 2-10 in each cell, style slender, stigma unequally 2-lobed. Capsules usually 4-20 seeded. Seeds compressed, ovate or orbicular, densely hygroscopically hairy, on hooked retinacula.
