Description


Pubescent or hispid erect herbs. Stem branched, unarmed or with 3-fid spines. Leaves alternate, petiolate, toothed or lobed, crenate. Capitula unisexual, monoecious, male capitula in upper axils, female in lower axil. Involucral bracts numerous, 1-seriate, outer bracts free, inner bracts connate, forming an indurate involucre which is tipped by hooked spines. Female involucres usually 2-flowered, sessile. Cypselas 2 in each capitulum, included in hardened spiny involucre, pappus absent.
