Perennial herbs with an erect or prostrate stem. Leaves forming an apical crown, petioles  shorter than leaf-blade, sheathing at base, lamina ovate or oblong, often variegated. Inflorescence spadix, stipitate, cylindric, equalling or shorter than spathes, spathes subtubular to cymbiform, male and female inflorescence usually contiguous. Flowers unisexual, perigone absent. Male flowers : stamens free, filaments usually distinct, thecae opposite. Female flowers : ovary subglobose, 1-loculed, ovule solitary, subbasilar, anatropous, stigma discifiorm. Fruit an ellipsoid berry, red when ripe. Seeds solitary, ellipsoid.
