Aquatic herbs, totally submerged or with floating leaves, in fresh or brakish warer, with creeping rootstock, stems terete or compressed. Leaves opposite or alternate, entire or toothed, with intrafoliaceous stipules, submerged leaves sessile or petiolate, floating leaves petiolate, blades leathery. Inflorescence a pedunculate spike, rising from membranous spathe. Flowers small, hermaphrodite, perianth 4-merous, bractlike. Stamens 4, united with perianth at base, anthers sessile on perianth-segments. Carpels 4, 1-celled, ovule solitary, campylotrpous, stigmas persistent. Fruit of small, coriaceous or spongy druplets. Seeds subreniform.
