Description


Annual or perennial succulent herbs. Leaves often alternate, sometimes opposite or whorled, entire, exstipulate. Spikes terminal or axillary, solitary or fascicled. Flowers minute, bisexual, sessile, or sunk in the rachis, often whorled, bracteate. Sepals and petals absent. Stamens 2, very short. Ovary obtuse, acute or beaked, 1-celled, stigmas usually penicillate. Fruit indehiscent. Seeds minute, with membranous testa.
