Description


Trees, rarely shrubs, gigantic with mostly whorled branched. Leaves evergreen, persistent or deciduous, stiff needle-like, arranged in 1-7 foliate fascicles. Male and female cones on the same tree. Stamens and ovuliferous scales spirally arranged round a common axis. Stamens many, anthers 2, naked, compact with very short filaments. Female strobilus with scales, much enlarged, usually numerous, accrescent. Ovules 2, collateral, bract scales also enlarged, narrow, thinner than ovuliferous scales or reduced or hidden. Fruit a woody cone. Seeds 2, mostly unilaterally winged.
