Trees or shrubs, dioecious or monoecious. Leaves alternate or opposite, or absent, very variable, acicular to broadly lamellate, usually spirally arranged, young leaves often rose or red in colour. Male flowers in terminal or axillary strobili, dense, catkin-like, stamens usually numerous, filaments short, anthers 2-celled, pollen grains winged. Female flowers solitary, stalked or sessile, axillary or terminal or in strobili with 1-ovuled megasporophylls on a swollen, fleshy, brightly coloured receptacle bearing the seed. Seed solitary, round or ovoid, seed-coat fleshy or skinny.
