Freshwater herbs. Stems usually cormlike. Leaves all basal, crowded, submerged leaves shortly petiolate, floating leaves with long petiolate, 3-11 veined. Flowers unisexual or bisexual within tubular spathe, spathe peduncled, ribbed or winged, with1-many flowers, apex bifid or trifid. Male flowers: pedicels longer. Female flowers: pedicels shorter or without pedicel; sepals 3;  petals 3, much longer and wider than sepals. Stamens 3-15, filaments linear, flattened, anthers laterally dehiscent, ovary oblong, ovules numerous, stigmas 2 per style. Fruits cylindric, fusiform or conic. Seeds small, numerous.
