Description


Annual, aquatic, herbs, submerged in fresh or brackish water. Stems slender, fragile, much branched, rooting at base. Leaves subopposite or pseudo-whorled, sessile, linear, 1-nerved, base sheathing, margin spinulose-toothed. Plants monoecious or dioecious, flowers minute, unisexual, solitary or few in leaf axil. Male flowers: perianth 2-lipped, membranous, stamen 1, anther subsessile, 1-4 thecous, dehiscing at apex. Female flowers: sessile, perianth tubular, sometimes absent, carpel solitary, sessile, ovule solitary. Fruit an elliptic-oblong achene. Seeds with thin testa, embryo straight, without endosperm.
