Stemless shrubs to large trees. Stems
solitary or clustered, usually covered with persistent leaf bases. Leaves 5-30,
pinnate, leaf-sheath open, fibrous, pinnae linear to rhomboid, always jagged at
apices, regularly or irregularly arranged, petiole slender to robust,
channelled or ridged. Inflorescence interfoliar, with basipetal or acropetal
sequence of flowering, branched in 1-2 orders. Flowers sessile, one female
between two males. Male flowers: ellipsoid, coriaceous to fleshy, stamens
usually 20-90. Female flowers: globose, coriaceous to fleshy. Ovary trilocular.
Fruits drupe, ellipsoid, red, 1-3 seeded. Seeds ellipsoid, hard.
