Scandent herbs, rooting at nodes on trees. Leaves distichous, entire, oblique, ovate or ovate-cordate, appressed to tree trunks, often perforated, sometimes pinnatifid,  petiole geniculate at tip, sheath persistent or deciduous. Inflorescence 1-several. Peduncle  shorter than petiole, spathe boat-shaped, cuspidate, deciduous. Spadix sessile, subcylindric, slightly shorter than spathe. Flowers bisexual, perigone absent.  Stamens 4, free, filaments flattened, longitudinally dehiscent. Ovary 2-locular, ovules 2 per locule, anatropous, placenta axile, stigma oblong-elliptic to linear. Fruit a berry, 1-3 seeded. Seed obovoid to ellipsoid, compressed.
