Perennial, evergreen or seasonally dormant herbs, tuberous. Leaves cordate, or sagittate, rarely peltate,  petiole sheathing. Inflorescence 1-many. Peduncles usually short. Spathe strongly constricted, tube persistent, limb boat-shaped. Spadix shorter than spathe. Female zone cylindric-conoid,  separated from male zone by longer zone of sterile male flowers. Flowers unisexual, perigone absent. Male flowers 4-6 androus, stamens connate into synandria. Ovary ovoid, 2-4 locular, ovules numerous, anatropous or hemianatropous, parietal or axile, stigma sub-hemispheric or 2-4 lobed. Fruit berry, 3-4 celled. Seeds ovoid.
