Description


Large herbs with erect stems. Leaves obovate-lanceolate or elliptic-lanceolate. Flowers in rigid, terminal panicles. Sepals 3. Petals 3, smaller than sepals, subequal,obovate. Stamens 6, all fertile, or 3 fertile and 3 sterile, all filaments naked. Ovary of 3 subequal locules, 5-10 ovuled, rarely 1-2 ovuled. Fruits indehiscent, globose, often bluish or bluish-black, usually 5- 10 ovuled. Seeds usually 2 in two series, smooth.
