Stoloniferous or rhizomatous perennial herbs. Flowering culms arising from central or lateral of a tufted normal leaves, erect, trigonous. Leaves three ranked, basal or cauline; blade coriaceous or herbaceous, linear-lanceolate, ligule absent. Involucral bracts leaf-like. Inflorescence terminal, compound panicle. Spikelets ovoid to oblong-ellipsoid or globose, many flowered. Glumes membranous to chartaceous, spirally arranged, glabrous, 1-nerved. Flowers bisexual. Perianth segments 2, hyaline, boat-shaped. Stamens 2. Ovary terminal, style continuous with the ovary, stigmas 2-3. Nutlets sculptured, biconvex, ovate, elliptic, or almost orbicular, smooth or wrinkled.
