Annual or perennial sedges. Culms tufted, erect, smooth. Leaves basal; linear, flat to canaliculated; ligule absent. Involucral bract leaf like. Inflorescence capitate, terminal or pseudoterminal. Spikes 1-8 per inflorescence ovoid. Spikelet small, sessile, terete, densely many flowered. Glumes spirally imbricate, caducous, lower 1-2 empty. Flowers bisexual. Perianth consisting of 2 scales. Stamens 1-2, anthers oblong-linear. Style continuous with the ovary, stigmas 2-3. Nutlets obovate, ellipsoid to narrowly cylindric, trigonous or plano-convex, smooth, reticulate, enclosed by the hypogynous scales.
