Deciduous trees or shrubs. Leaves simple, alternate, stipulate, leaf balde simple to deeply palmately-lobed, toothed. Male inflorescence axillary, long-peduncled, many-flowered, cylindrical catkin. Male flowers: sepals 4, basally connate, stamens 4, pistillode present. Female inflorescence peduncled, axillary catkins. Female flowers: sessile, sepals 4, connate at the base, persistent and fleshy, ovary 1-loculed, ovules pendulous, staminode absent. Fruit a juicy sosrosis of druplets or syncarp enclosed by succulent calyx, endocarp shell-like.
