Culms erect. Branch buds solitary, ovate to triquetrous, swollen, not keeled,
generally with 3-splits. Culm sheaths usually with rather pale hairs, auricles
generally absent, if present very small, blades triangular to narrowly
triangular. Leaves in complements. Flowering generally leafless, sometimes
leafy. Inflorescence pseudospikelets with 1-6 florets, all florets generally
fertile but in some species the apical one sterile or reduced to a glume or
palea on an extended rachilla. Paleas of lower florets 2-keeled, those of
uppermost floret not or only slightly keeled. Lodicules none or very scare.
Ovary with hairy apex, bearing a long slender hairy style, with usually an
undivided stigma. Fruit a nucoid caryopsis, embryo small.
