Description


Perennials, rarely annuals, with tufted or stoloniferous culms. Leaf-blades flat or involute, ligule ciliolate. Inflorescence of spikes or spiciform racemes, mostly subdigitate. Spikelets solitary, lanceolate-oblong, biconvex, biseriate and secund along triquetrous rhachis; florets 2, lower neuter, upper perfect; lower glume absent or suppressed, upper equal to spikelet, obscurely 4-5 nerved; lower lemma subequal to upper glume, lower palea absent; upper lemma crustaceous, margins firm, incurved, apex inrolled, upper palea equal or subequal to its lemma. Fruit a caryopsis.
