Description


Trees, rarely shrubs with numerous horse-tail like jointed branchlets, toothed at their joints, without leaves. Flowers monoecious in catkins. Male catkins terete, elongate or short, flowers 2-bracteoled, sessile in the axil of the toothed sheaths. Perianth 2-parted, deciduous. Stamen 1, filaments exserted and thickened at the base, anthers 2-celled, opening longitudinally. Female catkins usually axillary, globular or ellipsoid, flowers arranged in several longitudinal rows, bract 1, supported by 2 lateral bractlets. Ovary with a single ovule, suspended, style terminal with 2 filiform stigmas. Ripe cones woody, indurated.
