Description


Annual or perennial herbs, rarely subshrubs, stems glabrous. Leaves simple, petiolate, alternate, lamina flat, entire or irregularly serrate or lobed. Inflorescence axillary or terminal panicles or spike-like, without bractlets. Flowers usually bisexual or some female, bracteate or ebracteate. Tepals usually 5, polypetalous or gamopetalous. Disk usually absent. Stamens 5 or fewer, filaments sometimes basally united, filiform or capillary, anthers oblong, without an appendage. Ovary superior, globose, 1-celled with solitary ovule, styles obscure or very short, terminal, stigmas 2(-5). Fruit a utricle, pericarp membranous or fleshy, adnate to seed or free, indehiscent.
